British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
