European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
