The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
