New research reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
