Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

19 of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his maiden trophy for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the tournament title decider.

The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a challenging season, managing just a single victory at the Grand Slams and suffering a setback at the American major.

The player's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his service game in particular - resulted in him exiting of the top ten and finally separating with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Now working with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has consistently improved in the past month - culminating in a closely contested three-set win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It is the player's maiden championship after the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hard court from spring of the previous year.

The win also means he has won 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my both daughters together, so to get a trophy is especially meaningful," commented tennis professional Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in that event previously this season.

His counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had led observers to doubt if his capacity to play at the elite level was over.

Yet the athlete has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play positively, supported by an improved serving game.

He fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

The pair exchanged breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden tour title, gained dominance to push for a final set.

Moutet saved four early-game opportunities in a competitive deciding set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, Medvedev earned victory with a shot at the net area, with the Frenchman unable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
