The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
