The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president started showing all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater also.
The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ in biblical accounts requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
